Libby Lied for a Noble Cause!
Sat Oct 29, 2005 at 12:35:14 PM PDT
This is going to be the new GOP talking point, following their standard "up is down" patented methodology.
The "perjury is a technicality" talking point went down in flames quickly. Why? because Clinton was impeached on this same "technicality."
They can't say Libby's crime doesn't matter, but they can say he lied to protect national security. (Up is down, remember.)
Unlike Clinton, who lied to protect his sordid sexual behavior, Libby lied for unselfish, indeed patriotic, motives.
The talking heads like Chris Mathews are already edging toward this.
Constitutional Crisis Ahead
Wed Oct 19, 2005 at 12:40:17 PM PDT
Does anyone really think that special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald will be allowed to move ahead on any indictments he may bring against Bush and his cronies? This gang knows no bounds and will do anything to hold onto their power.
Fitzgerald may well bring indictments, but then he will be stopped by a brick wall. I remind you of the case of Sibel Edmunds, who testimony about 9/11 to the Senate was classified as a state secret.

Go read Digby NOW!!
Wed Oct 12, 2005 at 08:59:06 PM PDT
This is a must read from Digby:
After reading my post about the WHIG group from last night, conservative journalist Robert George wrote in to give me a heads up about a post he wrote earlier (and cross posted on the Huffington Post) about "those two tense weeks in July" on both sides of the atlantic. This was the same period, you'll remember, in which the "sexed up" British dossier came to a head and resulted in the suicide of one of the major players in that saga.
Judy Miller, the Zelig of Iraq lies, was right in the middle of that too.

Bush announces, "I'm not responsible!"
Fri Sep 23, 2005 at 03:51:57 PM PDT
Bush went before the cameras today after getting briefed about Hurricane Rita. With Chertoff standing behind him, he patiently explained how he was a mere observer and how state and local officials would take the blame for any screw-ups.

Filibuster and Social Security: Action Alert!
Wed May 11, 2005 at 08:35:04 AM PDT
Senator Reid's statement yesterday made a strong case for the filibuster and against the nuclear option, but it didn't hit Bushco where they are weakest: on social security.
The fact is that the nuclear option is the first step in destroying social security. Bush first tried to bamboozle the public with his 60 days tour on privatization. That didn't work. So now the nuclear option has come out from under the wraps. Once the filibuster becomes history, the republican majority in congress will be able to pass Bush's privatization scheme, taking the first step in destroying social security as we know it. It won't matter that there is no democratic support whatsoever.
Before Gannon the Press objected to infiltration
Sat Feb 26, 2005 at 09:09:51 AM PDT
The corporate media continue to pretend that they don't know what the issue is when it comes to Jeff Gannon. Maybe it's that bloggers are poking into private lives. Maybe it's that it's "dangerous for the White House to get into the business of defining who is and is not a member of the press corps," as this recent
LA Times article suggested.
But the obvious point is that the White House has been exposed in infiltrating the press. This used to get them upset.
When the CIA did it, official media organizations object loudly, as this American Society of Newspaper Editors statement makes clear:
The American Society of Newspaper Editors strongly objects to your dangerous decision to allow intelligence officers to pose as journalists, and to recruit reporters to serve as informers.
For Those Who are Squeamish about Guckert
Tue Feb 15, 2005 at 07:55:16 PM PDT
We can't hang back on Guckert, saying we're playing with homophobic prejudice. This is not the time to be squeamish. The Rude Pundit explains it all very, very clearly.
Here's why it matters that the Bush administration allowed an alleged gay male prostitute with no journalistic experience into the White House on a daily basis and even allowed him to ask the President a question at one of Bush's precious little press conference debacles:
Right now, in Egypt, in Pakistan, in Thailand, there's a guy who's done nothing wrong other than be in the wrong place at the wrong time who's hanging on a wall, his wrists bleeding from the metal bracelets, his fingernails torn out from trying to, for fuck's sake, hold himself up to give his torn arm muscles some rest. He's been stripped naked, cold water has been thrown on him, electric prods have been shoved in his nuts.
Bizarre Fascist Recruitment Drive in Church!
Sat Feb 12, 2005 at 05:22:34 PM PDT
Via Billmon, this post shows how fascist culture is penetrating America and how religion and war are becoming intertwined. Read this excerpt for a taste.
At this point Captain Sturecker preached to us in full dress uniform about his early faith was based in fear of going to hell, but now he doesn't need to fear death, and about his experiences in the black hawk afair. In particular he prayed after his first drive back to base (If you`ve seen the movie, he was the humvee driver with the injured man on strecher in the back. He was also the guy that said, "The difference in between heroes and cowards isn`t the fear it`s what they do with it"), and after that even though the vehicle was shot to hell, he had no casualties. He even watched an RPG barely miss its' mark and deflect off his hood. Every word of this might be true, but it was also part of a "The lord will protect you in the military" themed sermon. I have never had both respect and disgust for a single individual with such volume in my life.
Bombshell US Media Won't Touch
Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 10:06:26 AM PDT
In the war on Terror, you're either with us or with the terrorists, W says. But Bush's good friend the President of Pakistan is paying out half a million dollars that will go directly to Al Qaeda! This from the BBC:
Pakistan says it has paid 32m rupees ($540,000) to help four former wanted tribal militants in South Waziristan settle debts with al-Qaeda.
Military operations chief in the region, Lt Gen Safdar Hussain, said the payments were part of a peace deal signed on Monday with tribesmen.
It is the first time Pakistan has admitted making such payments. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4249525.stm
I searched Yahoo news and Google news, and couldn't find a single story on this shocking development in the US media.
Here is our close "ally in the War on Terror" paying off Al Qaeda supporters. It's just too inconvenient for our corporate media to notice it.
Thank God for Fox!
Mon Nov 08, 2004 at 07:51:26 PM PDT
And Thank God for CNN, MSNBC, The Note, the NY Times and so many other media paragons. And God bless Timmy Russert, Hannity, and Chris Matthews, one and all.
Because of them, as we wonder what went wrong in the election, we don't have to look past our own little noses. Because our media behaved so well, exhibited such scrupulous fairness, we can only blame ourselves for our loss. We failed. We weren't sympathetic enough to the religious people. We didn't use email effectively. We were too nice. The list of our inadequacies goes on and on.
So I say God bless our media for it's bright light of truth. Its honest glare highlights all our faults so clearly.
Imagine if the media had mocked Kerry! If they had pretended that the swift boat smears deserved even a moment of exposure in the solid mainstream media! If they had repeatedly taken Kerry's words out of context and twisted them beyond recognition! If they had treated Bush like a religious icon!
I know, it is hard to imagine.
But just suppose the media had done all those things:
Political Abuse: MUST READ
Mon Nov 08, 2004 at 09:29:47 AM PDT
From Matthew Gross's blog:
Listen as Donna and Nancy Pelosi and Senator Charles Schumer take to the airwaves saying that they have to go back to the drawing board and learn from their mistakes and try to be better, more likable, more appealing, have a stronger message, speak to morality. Surf the blogs, and read the comments of dismayed, discombobulated, confused individuals trying to figure out what they did wrong. Hear the cacophony of voices, crying out, "Why did they beat me?"
And then ask anyone who has ever worked in a domestic violence shelter if they have heard this before.
They will tell you, every single day.
The answer is quite simple. They beat us because they are abusers. We can call it hate. We can call it fear. We can say it is unfair. But we are looped into the cycle of violence, and we need to start calling the dominating side what they are: abusive. And we need to recognize that we are the victims of verbal, mental, and even, in the case of Iraq, physical violence.
As victims we can't stop asking ourselves what we did wrong.
Bush Relatives for Kerry! It's REAL.

Bush relatives use website to show support for Kerry
By Sandeep Kaushik, Globe Correspondent | October 20, 2004
SEATTLE -- Six blood relatives of President Bush who support John F. Kerry's bid for the presidency have launched a website to publicize their sharp disagreements with Bush's policies.
The site, www.bushrelativesforkerry.com, consists of personal statements from a group of decidedly liberal second cousins of the president, none of whom knows him personally. All are grandchildren of Mary Bush House, the sister of Prescott Bush, a former US senator from Connecticut and the father and grandfather of the two Bush presidents.
The introduction to the site opens with the slogan, ''Because blood is thicker than oil!" and states: ''As the election approaches, we feel it is our responsibility to speak out about why we are voting for John Kerry, and to do our small part to help America heal from the sickness it has suffered since George Bush was appointed President in 2000. We invite you to read our stories, and please, don't vote for our cousin!"
US Cellular Refuses to pull Sinclair Ads
Tue Oct 19, 2004 at 03:21:13 PM PDT
I'm sure many others got this email from U.S. Cellular:
At U.S. Cellular, we strive to provide the very best in customer satisfaction and we appreciate your recent inquiry regarding Sinclair
Broadcasting Group. As a non-partisan corporation, U.S. Cellular does not
take a position in the presidential race. However, we believe the program "Stolen Honor" does not provide an optimal environment for our advertising.
Therefore, we have instructed Sinclair affiliates not to run U.S. Cellular commercial spots two hours before, during and after the program's airing.
We value your opinion and hope our response addresses your concerns.
Sincerely,
John E. Rooney
President & CEO
U.S. Cellular

This is meaningless. The money flow will continue from U.S. Cellular to Sinclair. Just move the ads around a little.
Bush Incompetence Exposed!!
Fri Oct 15, 2004 at 10:54:18 AM PDT
This story exposes Bush's utter incompetence for the world to see: Zarqawi was allowed unfettered access to the money flow UNTIL TODAY!
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Friday ordered a freeze on assets of the militant group led by Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, which has claimed responsibility for a series of bombings, kidnappings and beheadings in Iraq (news - web sites).
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control added Zarqawi's Tawhid and Jihad group to its list of suspected terrorists and terrorism financiers.
The move, which came a day after Britain ordered banks to seek out and freeze any assets of the group, blocks any accounts, funds and assets of Tawhid and Jihad in the United States.
"Dean" David Broder Crucifies Bush!!!

No Accountability
By David S. Broder
Sunday, October 10, 2004; Page B07
EXTON, Pa. -- The afternoon I spent interviewing voters in this Philadelphia suburb, in one of the prime battleground states, confirmed the seriousness with which people are taking this election. The answer to my opening question, "Do you plan to vote next month?" was often, "Absolutely!" The one man who hesitated turned out to be anything but indifferent; he was just agonizing over his choice of a candidate.
What these voters -- and their counterparts in other communities -- seem to realize is that Nov. 2 provides the opportunity to weigh in on a terribly consequential choice for the country and for their families. Elections are the great accountability device in our system of representative government -- and accountability has never loomed larger than it does now.
John Kerry and John Edwards both have insisted in the debates that they have been "entirely consistent" in their stands on Iraq. That is plainly not the case, and their waverings -- especially Kerry's -- have created the opening for President Bush to charge that the Democrats' "mind-set would paralyze America in a dangerous world." That criticism has sunk in; I heard it echoed over and over again among Pennsylvania voters who said they were supporting the president.
But the accountability questions for Kerry and Edwards are outweighed, in my view, by the startling refusal of Bush and Vice President Cheney to acknowledge the errors and failures of their audacious policy in Iraq.
New Abu Ghraib revelations!
Sat Oct 09, 2004 at 06:47:58 AM PDT
WASHINGTON, October 8, 2004 -- The military's mission at Abu Ghraib was inadequately planned almost from conception. It was subordinated to political and intelligence goals and bogged down at every level by inadequate resources and hostile conditions, according to classified documents reviewed and now posted by the Center for Public Integrity.

Rightwing spin backfires!
Wed Sep 29, 2004 at 07:58:21 PM PDT
Every time I'd read a new Gallup Poll plugging for Bush, or a new anti-Kerry rant in the NeoCon Times, I'd get depressed.
Then I decided to get mad - and get even. I just finished donating some $$ to ACT, and I volunteered to do phoning for Kerry.
I hope others are responding this way. First, it makes you feel better. Second, it makes the rightwing slime backfire against them.
More more pissed off they make us, the harder we will work.
